It’s an interesting topic, and as I sat down to write a simple post on how one of my favorite stupidly simple web-based whitenoise machines, playnoise, had just disappeared from the internet (and how I was also very coincidentally introduced to mynoise.net right around the same time which seems to have everything I’d want and more as a replacement!) my brain started to spin on this and realized it was probably worth even more than that just that simple silly post.
I’m typically a listen-to-soundtracks-type person while working as I’ve found that lyrical content distracts me from most required-brain tasks at hand (except heavy metal in particular circumstances) or dedicated excel work which allows me to listen to whatever the heck i want.. and I’ve even found that sometimes even soundtracks distract me too and I find myself reverting back to white noise/brown noise, etc. which gives my ears something to do but allows me to focus better. Anyway, I loved the simplicity that playnoise was. Hit the kind of ‘noise you wanted’, and it just went. mynoise definitely ratches all of this up a notch – from the different noise generators you can summon, to the equalizers within each, the nature, the cityscapes, and ambient stuff.. it’s pretty comprehensive looking. I’m excited to get more into it. Man.. this really sounds like an unintentional promo/sponsorship oppty for mynoise … hey…good folks from mynoise… wanna make some sort of deal?
So, it’s now officially got a bookmark and happy to have an expansive new tool in my work arsenal. End of blog post.
But when I stopped to think, I’ve realized white noise is equally a huge part of my personal, outside-of-work life as well. After moving to the city several years ago and having noises outside our condo windows all night long, we got in the habit of turning on a white noise machine in the evening more to hopefully cancel out whatever ‘territorial suspicious’ sounds the dogs may possibly pick up, but as the years progressed, it’s definitely turned into a habit and almost a fallback comfort as we’ve gotten older and enjoyed the ear distractions in an evening. Your brain just isn’t as focused on silence and filling it up with random stuff from the day as one might expect. It’s not as loud as it used to be, mind you, but definitely a present/constant hum. WHICH AGAIN in retrospect, is not surprising that I’ve grown accustomed/half reliant to it, as as a kiddo, found that I a) particularly enjoyed falling asleep when the A/C fan would turn on above my head and do a constant air flow hum and b) grew up listening to books on cassette tape that i could literally repeat word for word (almost a countdown sheep type deal). So, think white noise, before white noise was really a thing. Just kinda interesting when you stop back and think about it. Worth a lengthier post, I’d say. It’s certainly a ‘thing[s] to listen to‘
And now the kid has a white noise machine in his room all evening as well, again, as a semi-sound blocker but potentially a sleeping aid too like I appreciated which is really fascinating/half scary to get into all the WILL THIS vs. WON’T THIS harm your future child’s brain development. I would like to say no… cause I’m not screwed up… but … we’re all kinda screwed up a bit, aren’t we? IS WHITE/PRE-WHITE NOISE TO BLAME!? How dare I introduce you all to potential additive brain rot in the form of mynoise if you haven’t been properly pre-indoctrinated to this world.. Oh this is beginning to go off the deep end…coffee is kicking in.. I should end this now.
