This week, one of my favorite ska bands, Streetlight Manifesto, is releasing their new CD, The Hands That Thieve. The group was formed after Tomas Kalnoky controversially left his original third wave ska band Catch-22 and jumped ship to form Streetlight, leaving Catch to search for a new frontman and find a new identity. Streelight’s debut album, Everything Goes Numb and Catch’s Dinosaur Sounds both feature veiled attacks on one another and in 2006, Streelight even re-released Keasbey Nights, Catch-22’s debut album as Thomas, the primary songwriter wanted the new version to sound the way the original should have.
Everything Went Numb, the song that is above got me hooked on these guys. Imagine bringing a bari saxophone on tour. Awesome. From their second CD, Somewhere in the Between, We Will Fall Together is just an incredible example of ska music and Kalnoky’s style of music and I’m excited what the new CD, The Hands That Thieve will hold.
Although the band has been through two major robberies in both the US and Europe, I’m glad these guys are still making music and keeping ska alive.
