Pocahontas

Yep! You read the title right!

I watched the movie and went way back in my youth last night. And honestly, I’m pretty pleasantly pleased at the movie in general (good use of alliteration back there if you didn’t notice haha).

It’s definitely nice to go back in Disney and see where they came from to how they’ve survived and succeeded in the movie industry today. Pocahontas was one of these films that perfectly fits in 90 minutes, has the good vs. evil trait, beautiful underlying music and themes of new hope and direction.

Now, I could easily post a video of Colors of the Wind and talk about how everyone loves this song (I do too, don’t worry).. But my favorite song in the film actually came from one that wasn’t in the theatrical release of the film. If you have the 10th Anniversary Edition of it, you truly have heard the best song of the film in my opinion. The song was originally intended for the film and was almost finished when Disney ran the movie (with the song) to a few test audiences, the younger (kid) audiences pretty much started squirming during this song, probably wanting to get back to the action. While it was released without it, the song did perform really well with teen and adult audiences and was eventually put back in.

The YouTube video is a fantastic lead-in and covers the whole song.. And who’s the male’s voice you might ask? Mel Gibson. Huh. Go figure – the guy in 1995 was not half bad and has a decent set of pipes too. Sure sure, Judy Kuhn destroys him, but the two of them together in this song really made the whole film for me.
