I have a playlist that i’ve maintained for years where I log ear worms, interesting production choices, mistakes that maybe made into a final mix… just things that surprise me from after years of listening to thousands and thousands of songs. The playlist if called ‘JUST MIX THINGS’. I think where you get where I’m going.

Below is my latest addition to the list.

Holy gating sound production decision. I think i told my friend, “MY EARS ARE BLEEDING WHY IS THE GATE-LEVEL SO HIGH ON THE GUITARS!?” I could barely stand it after the first few listens – I have literally never heard a guitar gate level so high before and it’s hard to understand why either the band or engineer wanted it this way. Is it more… math rocky because of this? Did they want to set themselves apart from the crowd? Hard to say/know. But man, it confused the heck out of me.. Such an interesting choice, and it always is fun when after thousands of music listening hours to hear a new sound that have never touched your ears before. So, at least props to the group for joining the ranks of the few..

… maybe i’ll go in and listen again.
