Hop Along

There have been some fantastic CD releases in the last few days such as City and Colour, 30 Seconds to Mars, Sleeping with Sirens, etc. Occassionally, I will admit, I get out of the habit of finding a new band and fall back on some of my favorites and start running old favorites ragged – Nothing wrong with that, right? I didn’t think so..

Yesterday in a local music store, I was introduced to Hop Along blasting through their stores and was so caught off guard by the music I had to ask who I was listening to as SoundHound couldn’t find anything from my phone! Let me ask a question, can you just toss out standard music norms and archetypes out of the door and make music that is compelling? The answer, is Yes. A big freakin’ yes.

Lead singer Frances Quinlan is AWESOME and uses one of the most unique voices I have ever heard. Her songs, creating a true indie/emo/fuzzy acoustic guitars/random string jam molds unbelievable well. Forming Hop Along, Queen Ansleis in 2005, she released Freshman Year, her debut as a solo acoustic project. Adding a bassist and drummer they just released Get Disowned in 2012 and this will most likely be my album of the year… I hate that I’m just discovering this group now.
