Red / Duran Duran?

I was in for a surprise tonight. Let me describe my feelings in chronological order.. Confusion, reassurance, confusion again, bewilderment, seeking confirmation, shock, anger, ultimate realization, confusion for a third time, realization, acceptance and now here I am typing the blog.

I love RED (or R3D). I really solid hard rock Christian band that has really built up their group from the bottom up. They first hit me hard on their debut CD, End of Silence with their rock and orchestral arrangements; and not just Evanescence style strings, but very well developed parts (actually written by the band) that feed into everything just perfectly and unbelievable compliment their style and sound of music. To be honest, it truly defines it.

They just recently released their new CD, Until we Have Faces which is no doubt their hardest music to date, but I’m going to back up a CD and talk about ‘their song’ Ordinary World on their second CD, Innocence & Instinct. I loved the song. Such a departure from the band’s normal rock-ish feel and I was happy to hear them incorporate new styles in the music. A live video of the song is below..

Now, imagine my surprise when I’m driving back from Charleston, listening to 90’s on 9 on Sirius.. And I hear this chorus to Red’s Ordinary world.. What? Excuse me.. This is a stripped down version, and what?.. Wait.. I’m still on the 90s channel..right? Okay yes.. But Red wrote this in the 2000s.. Who IS  this? What? Duran Duran!?!? You’re kidding me.. As you sure radio? This isn’t red? No, definitely Duran Duran.. But that must mean..

Yep. Duran Duran wrote Ordinary World in 1993. Go freakin’ figure. Who woulda guessed it. I was shocked..no..stunned to hear it. I couldn’t believe I had been fooled so much into thinking this had been such a true hard-rock song. Serves me wrong haha. I do love both versions, and Red did do a fantastic job covering the song but really keeping it true it to it’s original form.

But I’m inspired. Next song will be another favorite hard-rock cover. The discovery certainly surprised me tonight and it’s time to return to the favor to you all in just a few days. Get excited.
