Had an enjoyable ride blast to the past 2019-inspired Lizzo peloton ride this week which made me realize that she hadn’t released new music in a while which I went to check out… and she did! Well, kinda. I mean, she did. We got these two below…
And both were decently liked and it seemed like she was continuing to mature/develop her sound and have it continue to get richer and richer..
And then it got pulled.. And she dropped the mixtape ‘MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING’ this summer instead which almost feels like a slight-reversal and a drop of just i’m kinda mad and want to release some other stuff that’s not what the world expects from me but maybe is what i’m feeling right now which is the direction of this 30minute mixtape. It’s something! There are some decent tracks on there but she emulates a lot of Megan which i’m not the biggest fan of and while of the beats/samples are solid, it to me, feels a little more of a regression than a progression of her sound..
Now, again, I like this modern 80s feel that i hear throughout the two earlier tracks and Lizzo’s ability to be playful through it all is what really draws me to her – and i think .. maybe she just got tired of these expectations and while that album is clearly done/ready – she just wanted to show another side (which kinda throws me back to the sound of some of her earlier EPs) so consider this a modern musical fork showing us her two sides?
I’ll continue to listen/get into it.. but I can’t help be disappointed I’m not getting ‘Love in Real Life’ instead. Hopefully Lizzo can get into a good head space to release it.
