Spiritbox – Tsunami Sea

I shared the below with a friend of mine after he asked about my first few listens of hot takes of Spiritbox’s Tsunami Sea, which undoubtedly will be one of the biggest metal releases of the year, and so I figured I may as well share with all of you, as I wrote to him, only with music videos added in.

Jay’s hot takes:

1. just starts super heavy with fata. really does set the tone.
2. love the groove of black rainbow – interesting vocoder usage stuff in there, which i don’t hate, but also, i’m not necessarily sure it works?
** 3. perfect soul is just a solid, solid track

**4. good bridge on keep sweet.

** 5. i can’t say soft spine was really my jam when it first dropped, but it’s really grown on me.. it’s a solid solid track.

6. tsunami sea a nice break in between the heavies. decent track.

7. a haven, i love the guitar tone – nylon stringy. part 1 is fine, but part 2 really builds into a super enjoyable breakdown/outro/ending.
8. NL/NL – just not my normal cup of tea but my god the video is enjoyable. i do enjoy the vocoder/edm flavor stuff stuff here.

** 11. deep end – first time we’re hearing vocal harmonies the WHOLE album on the last song? ha. sure, why not. definitely feels like a final album song, but is just different than the whole rest of it? it’s the most poppy in the album and is just different than the rest of it? I mean, i like it – i’m just kinda confused why it’s here. what a beautiful acoustic blend at the end.

** represent my faves (which depressingly are primarily the singles that were released – which are definitely the more poppy tracks of the album.
