Echosmith

A week ago, this song changed. I uh, promise I’m not crazy. But do allow me to explain.

Did I write about Echosmith this past winter/spring? Was it a whole year ago? I was incredibly excited after hearing even the first few notes/songs of what turned out to be an impressive debut from the group. You can find the old post here.

One of my favorite songs from the album was Cool Kids, which is probably rated in one of the top 4-5 tracks of the CD. I even posted the official web video that was out at that time. You can listen to it directly below and I will refer to it as the ‘original.’

A week ago, the official music video directed by Mark Pellington was released. It has an excellent following racking up 600k+ views in a week. I’ll post it below, BUT, listen carefully for those changes! I’ll even spell it out for you.

1:00 – The first chorus definitely has more prominent male vocal parts to round out Sydney
1:39 – Not only can you hear a new second guitar line but updated ambient straight key notes behind it. They were light in the original, but play a much bigger role now
2:33 – The “chu chu” vocal bits starting a whole pattern sooner
2:52 – Anyone else willing to bet the bass drop is just THAT much cleaner?
3:09 – Completely new high vocal (argument could be made for keys) descending patten
3:28 – Adding “whoa oh oh oh oh” and “like the cool kids” is an excellent little touch
3:38 – The new version ends on one note..and ends well – I definitely dig the tight ending. But this is where it gets interesting. If you watch the original video around 3:45ish, the bassist AND guitarist both stop playing at the end of the SAME chorus the new video ends BUT the song in the original video (and my CD) carries on. Was this looped and faded out in the studio? Actual decision of the band? It seems to me as though they like ending with a singular note… Kinda interesting to think about.

And my CD? The one I was so excited about pre-ordering in my earlier post matches the original version above. So, at some point after the release of the CD, the group decided to record a new version (or at least layer a few extra pieces) for the release of their new video. WHY? Why would you do this!? Music videos alter their original song all the time – weird cuts in the song, part replacements, etc. But this is the first time I have heard a song ENHANCED for a video.

I’m not upset, dear readers. But I want that new track. Want it bad.
