Karmin – Crash Your Party

Usually, I’m not one-upped when it comes to music discovery and linking riffs and songs to past music and songs that have been released, but this time I’m happy to admit defeat as this was a terribly cool find by a friend of mine.

I’ve been a huge fan of Karmin ever since I first heard their cover of Look At Me Now by Chris Brown and up until they just released their new EP Hello. Featured on that CD are a few songs that have since made it on the radio, but my one of my favorites is their song Crash Your Party.

Now, listen closely to the intro riff that appears a few times throughout the song .. I freakin’ love those minor-ish chords being walked down a scale and especially as that breaks into the poppy melodic nature of the verse and chorus it gets me every time. As I knew the two had both gone to BERKLEE school of music, I just figured it was their way of showing off their musical talents in embedding that into the song.

..

Not the case.

Check this out:

They took the riff!! Perhaps a touch different instrumentation, but it’s clearly the same song. My friend immediately recognized it from the Kia Soul Hamster Commercial and from there we took it one further and realized the Kia Commercial’s song was by an artist by the name of Black Sheep:

Although I was a little depressed that Karmin didn’t have the innovation to come up with the riff on their own, I’m glad they were able to embed it so seamlessly into their music and that my friend was able to point it out. I love this kind of stuff, so glad you all were able to tune in to today.
