About darn time – ever since The Open Door (their second studio album), I’ve been waiting patiently to hear something from the group with new musical direction and minus their quite popular guitarist Ben Moody. Surprisingly and outside of contrary belief, it was always Amy that pushed the envelope on the hardcore-roots while Ben preferred the softer approach towards Evanescence’s musical direction (writing the songs My Immortal, Breathe, You, etc…).
Therefore, when you hear the song open up around :20 in, a very Korn-esque sounding guitar comes in and populates the rest of the track.. Hinting that Amy was truly behind the writing and producing of this single. Do I like the song? I’ll admit it has grown on me. I do miss the general chorus of strings and orchestral direction that made Evanescence such a unique sound when the group exploded back in the mid 2000s out of their local Arkansas but otherwise, everything is produced well – continual excellent vocal work by Amy and her harmonies come in and out perfectly with a nice blend of the band behind her. Maybe a bit cooler guitar work would have been nice.. But I’ll let the album wait till a make an ultimate decision.
I’m excited to hear the new direction of the new CD which officially drops October 4th – only a few weeks away. We’ve only heard a snippet or two of Amy since The Open Door released back in 2006 on various movie soundtracks such as Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: Revisited so I’m pumped to hear what the whole album will provide. The single has certainly left me wanting more.
