I really do enjoy coming across music that reminds me there is beauty in simplicity. Enter my Saturday night where I had the pleasure of watching a very small indie group featuring Claire Wellin, a former cast member of the broadway production of Once, my favorite film of all time.
Growing up in Minnesota with a few friends of my own, Claire met several friends ‘she was waiting for’ at Lookingglass Theatre and developed her musicial personality which results in the cabaret/folk feel of her project, Youth in a Roman Field.
As I had stated above, the reminder of simplicity really hit home with me while watching her show. Three simple instruments playing root notes and simple melodies can really add up to something fantastic while playing together. Her harmonies are well established and the acoustic base is an incredibly calming technique. But you certainly don’t have to take MY word for it.. Check out a recent Tribune article here.
