The Ongoing Concept

Back in my youth, I only drank lighter beers. It could have made a difference that I was in college and could only afford the bottom shelf brands such as Bud Select and MGDs but it’s what I grew up drinking and it was what I knew. Now if you see me, I really do very much enjoy heavy beers, such as stouts, porters, black IPAs, etc. Tastes change/mature over time. You learn to appreciate new things such as the the malt, the hops, and grain to make a singular beer.

Similiarly with music, I’ve grown/matured too. While a kid I listened to Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, and was introduced to Christian music listening to DC Talk and breaking into ‘hardcore’ groups like Pillar or POD. When I first was introduced to the heavy metal/screamo genre, I hated it. I couldn’t understand why people would enjoy the screams, the heavy guitars, the simplistic nature of the songs and patterned melodies.

Well, like the beers above, musical tastes can change just as easily and when you can learn to listen to everything that goes into a heavy metal song, you realize it’s just as impressive as everything else you have trained your ear to listen to.

..

Long introduction, I know. Can you guys where I’m going to take this?

Welcome to The Ongoing Concept, hard rock/screamo band out of Idaho consisting of 3 brothers who have worked extremely hard to craft their own unique sound. They are about to drop their new CD and you know what hooked me? The banjo. And no, I’m not joking. Listen in around minute 2:42 and the solo banjo bit at 3:23!! Absolutely incredible. I’ve never heard anything like it.

As I stated before, banjo is expanding in mainstream culture! If musicians can now incorporate it in screamo music… the instrument truly knows no bounds. I’ll throw in my other favorite song of TOC for your listening pleasure.
