Revis was the big news of last week. They have a new album called Killing Time! It’s not half bad! Below are my favorite two new tracks from them..
This band has such an insanely special place in my heart – my dad and I discovered their first album Places for Breathing randomly flipping individually through the CDs at the local library for something new (or that wasn’t there the week prior which was carefully evaluated whether to bring home) which feels like we did almost weekly for many many years… and then would go home and put into our into computer CD tower and rip the album into our local computer jukebox (oh my… what was the name of that… OMG LOOK IT WAS MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX THAT WAS IT HOLY CATS) and built our ‘personal’ library… that frankly, we both still have and have continued to build out to this day (clearly at some point our personal libraries diverged, but i will admit that i’ll occasionally learn about an ‘oldie’ artist and will go and check my dad’s old library at the divergence state and will be surprised (and also…not) to learn that he already had them downloaded. Music… is timeless..
ANYWAY, back to the nostalgia hole I’ve somehow found myself in.. I remember being intrigued by the weird cover, but as it wasn’t an explicit lyric album, being allowed to grab it, and then popping it into my dad’s car’s (probably 6!) CD album changer – god… remember when cars had CD players!! this post is seriously turning into a unexpected mini nostalgia trip.. but then hearing the guitar riff of the first track… Caught in the Rain and immediately falling in love.
The whole album just is awesome and we only learned later that Revis was just kids from Carbondale, IL – so almost ‘local’ heroes to us. All the songs are great and was such a serious rock soundtrack to my life, and still is. It’s probably in my top 10 albums of all time if I’m being honest. I love telling people about it. Here’s Seven below..
I also now remember being SUPER pissed at some review we read that stated the album was just ‘nothing revolutionary, normal alt rock’ – which at the time my dad agreed with, which made me mad at him too… but i do get it now. That said, it is really, really well done and was just there at such a pivotal time for Jay in musical listening/education. I mean, it was good writing! If you’re a player, check out the lick from Caught in the Rain (it’s trickier than you might imagine)… i still remember it to this day.
Anyway, the tl;dr to catch you to the current is that there were some unhappy band members and some drama about parts re-recorded, and no second album came but they have released some songs over the last few years (reference a post from yours truly 13 years ago), and after a half-successful EP drop (Bottles of Lightning) last summer, Killing Time has finally arrived.
It’s good. It’s Revis. I’m not complaining. They will just always have that place in my heart.
